Rachel's Corner Values, Beliefs, and Goals
At Rachel's Corner child care in Hood River, Oregon we believe in giving guidance for children because we know they need lots of love and time to play. We believe that children need to feel total acceptance for who they are. We think they need guidance and support to grow and develop, but, that can’t happen unless they have trust in the people who care for them.
When children make mistakes, we look at it as an opportunity to teach a concept or an idea on what they could have changed to have prevented it. We use redirection when appropriate to encourage the children's development. We truly believe that when you control everything that concerns a child then the child loses out on the ability to learn. We embrace the value of forgiveness and second chances.
One of our program goals is to encourage children to resolve their own problems and conflicts themselves, but, with adult supervision if needed. To help children learn to do this I would encourage the children to use their words to communicate first what
the problem is, then reach a solution together and finally bring a successful closure to the process. We encourage children to generate possible solutions and try some. We know that it is important to encourage the development of social skills by setting up my activities in a way that enables the children to participate with each other. This makes it easier for the children to talk to one another and learn how to work together. In our years of experience, we have observed that children are very competent in settling their own disputes if given a little guidance from people who have earned their trust.
We believe that the way to instill trust and confidence in children is to always listen to what they say when they’re trying to explain how they feel. It’s important to get down to their level so that they feel comfortable talking to you about their thoughts and fears. I always want children to have a chance to say what’s on their mind as long as it is done in a way that encourages creativity in children I always mention the specific parts or colors of their artwork or projects that we especially like and to acknowledge their own excitement. We give children a variety of choices such as colors or media when setting out activities to play with. We encourage them to use their imagination when deciding how an activity should look when finished. This is a good way to help develop the children’s confidence and outdoor play is a key developmental area for children. They will never know how far they can jump, how fast they can run or how high they can swing if they’re never given the opportunity to try.
