Rachel's Corner Policies

Potty Training:

When the parent feels their child is ready to start using the toilet, we will support their efforts. To do this we will watch for signs and take them to the bathroom every fifteen to thirty minutes and encourage them to go.  We all get very excited when they are successful and we shower them with attention and praise.  We also stamp their hand with a stamp of their choosing.  If they have had three accidents in a day we put the diaper back on and tell them that we will try again tomorrow.  We are very positive in voice and words.

Pull ups:

When Children are potty trained we have them wear pull-ups during nap time just in case of an accident.  Parent's are expected to provide them and we put the child's name on them.  If the child has not had an accident we use them again the next day up to the end of the week.  We start the next week with a fresh one.

Screen Time:

The children at Rachel's Corner do not have access to computers, tablets, cell phones or any other electronic devices.  After lunch while we are cleaning up and Staff are taking their break we allow children two and older to watch thirty minutes of an educational video.   Books are also available as they are settling down for their naps. Parents are informed that their children are watching a non-violent culturally sensitive video.  Adults do not use electronics during working hours for personal use.

Consistent Caregiving:

At Rachel’s Corner, we have between three and five staff members, of the three of them are full-time in the childcare only working with the children, the other two – two have staggered full and part-time schedules.  Our environment is a family style all working together to ensure the children feel attached to each of us.  We have a very low turnover rate; three of the five staff members have worked together since Rachel’s Corner opened ten years ago.   Rachel’s Corner generally

enrolls six infants and ten toddlers our ratios for infants are three to one and toddlers five to one.
